Helping Children (and Grown-Ups) Understand Emotional Energy with Worleyâs World + Zones of Regulation

Ever felt like your child is bouncing off the walls one minute and flopped in a heap the next? Or they go from chilled to meltdown in the blink of an eye?
Youâre not imagining it, and youâre definitely not alone. Children experience huge shifts in energy and emotion throughout the day. Their brains are still learning how to process, regulate, and respond. Thatâs where understanding the Zones of Regulation can be a total game-changer.
But here at Worleyâs World, we do things a little differently. We donât just talk about emotions; we bring them to life through storytelling, characters, play, and connection. Because letâs be honest⌠emotions donât live in worksheets. They live in moments, in memories, and in monsters. Letâs dive in.
đ§ Understanding the 4 Energy Zones
The Zones of Regulation offer a simple, visual way to help children (and grown-ups!) recognize how theyâre feeling. Think of it like a traffic light for the brain:
đľ Blue Zone â Low Energy (âI feel tired or sadâ)
This is when your childâs energy is running on empty. They might be quiet or sluggish. You may hear them say, âI donât feel like itâ or âJust leave me alone.â Sound familiar?
đ ď¸ Support tip: Offer a warm cuddle, a quiet corner, or some downtime with their favourite monster. Whether theyâre feeling like Rocco or just need space, this is a chance to rechargeânot something to be âfixed.â
đ Green Zone â Happy & Focused (âI feel ready!â)
This is the sweet spot! Your child is alert, engaged, and ready to go. They might say, âLetâs play!â or âWatch this!â
đ ď¸ Support tip: Celebrate this moment. Say, âI love how focused and ready you are!â Let them enjoy the buzz of this balanced, feel-good energyâand soak it in with them.
đ Yellow Zone â The Wiggly Phase (âI feel fidgety or nervousâ)
Energy is creeping up! This can look like giggles, bouncing legs, fast talking, or restless hands. Sometimes itâs excitement; sometimes, itâs nerves⌠sometimes both!
đ ď¸ Support tip: This isnât ânaughtyââitâs a warning sign that their energy is building. Get ahead of it with a monster wiggle break, breathing games, or dancing like Jenn on a sugar high!
â¤ď¸ Red Zone â Overwhelmed (âI feel angry or scaredâ)
Boom. The feelings are too big to hold. Your child might shout, cry, run off, or totally shut down. This is the explode phaseâand logic wonât work here.
đ ď¸ Support tip: Donât match their energy. Instead, match their need for safety. Create a calm space, offer simple sensory tools, and speak gently. âI see youâre overwhelmed. Iâm here with you.â Just like Larry, your child needs you, not a lecture.
đŻ What Makes Worleyâs World Different
Letâs be realâthere are loads of emotion charts and keyrings out there. (We love a good laminated visual.) But information alone doesnât create transformation.
What makes Worleyâs World different is how we help it stick:
đĽ 1. We Tell Stories
When kids meet George (anger), Polly (anxiety), or Larry (fear), they donât just learn a colourâthey relate to it. They start to say things like âGeorgeâs fire is in my belly!â or âPollyâs butterflies are back.â Thatâs not just cuteâthatâs connection.
đŹ 2. We Give It Context
Knowing youâre in the red zone is greatâbut knowing what to do next is the real magic. Our monsters donât just explain emotions; they model tools, steps, and new ways of thinking. We bring emotional learning to life so it makes sense when it matters most.
đ§ 3. We Help Grown-Ups Too
Letâs be honestâmost of us didnât grow up learning this stuff. So, itâs no wonder we freeze when our kids explode! Thatâs why we support grown-ups alongside children. Whether itâs in a workshop, a drop-in, or a bedtime storyâyouâre learning too. And thatâs powerful.
đ¤ Co-Regulation: Borrowing Your Calm
Children learn to regulate through relationships. Before they can manage their emotions, they need to see how you do it.
This is co-regulation. It starts with how we show up in their big feelings. Instead of saying, âCalm down!â try:
đŁď¸ âYour feelings are big right now. Letâs breathe together.â
đŁď¸ âIâm right here. Youâre not alone.â
Every time you stay with them through the storm, youâre writing a new emotional scriptâone theyâll one day use with themselves.
đ Worley: Your Emotional Sidekick
Whether your child is feeling tired like Rocco, excited like Jenn, or angry like GeorgeâWorleyâs World provides them with a safe and playful way to understand whatâs going on inside.
We use monsters, music, movement, mindfulness, and (most importantly) connection to turn emotional chaos into emotional confidence.
